Columbus Pride weekend kicks off tomorrow at Pride Festival central in Goodale Park. Beginning around 4:00pm, there are lots of musical acts lined up for two different stages. I mentioned in my post earlier in the week that we were excited to see artist Beverly McClellan on Friday evening. She takes the Shelter House Stage at 9:00pm.
If you’re a fan of the NBC hit television show “The Voice” you’ll remember her as a semi-finalist from Season 1. She was one of two amazing out lesbian singers to rock the stage (The other being Vicci Martinez, a finalist who wound up 2nd). Now, for the show, McClellan, as I said before, channeled Melissa Etheridge on a couple of occasions. Christina Aguilera, her coach, seemed fond of picking power rock numbers for her to do. She did them well since she has amazing power.
What the show failed to showcase were both her incredible songwriting talent and her wide musical range. The first time I heard her first “label released” album (she had several independent releases), the January 2011 release simply titled, Beverly Mcclellan, I couldn’t believe my ears! She has some amazingly soulful tracks a-la Bonnie Raitt (whom she has also been compared to) and some really bluesy vocals too. Personally, I like to think I hear a little of the great singer/songwriter Carol King in the mix that is Beverly. She’s incredible.
In December she had a second album produced titled, Fear Nothing. It has a few of the more popular tracks from the first album and several great new recordings. It’s even better than the first album at showing off her talents.
McClellan is touring all summer and well into the fall. She’s on her own at several Pride events, a film festival and at women’s events. She’s opening for guitarist and songwriter Steve Vai at concerts all over the country.
If you’re in Columbus, hop on over to Stonewall Columbus and pay your $10.00 to get your dog tag to get in on Friday night – and Saturday too, for that matter – or pay for a bracelet at the gate (the tag will look cooler hanging from your rear view mirror… a tip from my wife). You’ll be glad you did.
