Today’s “Friday Movie Review” is of the 2009 Robert Cary directed drama film Save Me starring Judith Light and Chad Allen.
Light became a household name to women everywhere when she played the role of Karen Wolek on the daytime soap opera, “One Life to Live” from 1977 to 1983. She would later become a prime time star for her portrayal of Angela Bower, the foil to the Tony Micelli role played by Tony Danza on the hit sitcom, “Who’s the Boss“. A straight ally and a gay rights activist, Judith light helped her former “Boss” co-star Danny Pintauro (who played her son Jonathan) come out and has since taken an active role in many LGBT charities and causes.
Chad Allen began acting at the age of 7. He had recurring roles in 2 television series, “Our House” and “My Two Dads” prior to taking on the role of Matthew in the long running hit television drama series, “Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman”. Popular opinion has it that it was the Outing of Allen by the tabloid “The Globe” that caused the cancellation of the series after protests from family groups.
In Save Me, Light plays the role of Gayle, a woman who runs a Christian ministry known as Genesis House. Genesis House is an ex-gay organization that runs religious retreats for gay men to “help” them recover from their ‘affliction’ (being gay). She is challenged by the arrival of Mark (Chad Allen), a gay man who reminds her of her now deceased gay son. Mark, meanwhile can’t keep himself from becoming interested in another gay participant.
The movie is a sensitive portrayal from all sides. This isn’t at all about tough love nor is it about pastors telling their congregants to abuse the gay out of their children. It’s about a group of people who are all trying to help each other find their way. While the vast majority of both the medical science and the LGBT communities are completely opposed to ex-gay operations (count me among them), this movie doesn’t vilify anyone on either side. It seeks to find a middle ground where we can all come to some sort of understanding. I think it succeeds very well.
