Do you need an escape? Is this week bringing you down? Has the holiday season got your spirits in a slump? I might have a cure! If you’re uptight and completely politically correct, stop reading here. For the 99% of us in the LGBT community who don’t give a fig about total correctness (it has it’s place sometimes but not all the time), read on…
I was feeling bored and stressed a few days ago. Family issues that are far out of my ability to control are weighing on me and even more so on my wife. I was looking for a diversion. I found one. What I found was a first comic book by a relatively young man named Aaron Palmiter. His book is, It’s A Gay Life: Hilariously Queer Comics. It’s a collection of Aaron’s primarily gay themed comic sketches that mock life in general. The book blurb says it’s gay and lesbian and social issues focused but I find that it leans more toward gay and issues slants than lesbian.
Regardless, this book is laugh out loud funny in a totally politically incorrect, rated “R” kind of way. No, it’s not a book for your 8 year old. No, you wouldn’t show it to your pastor (well, mine would probably get a kick out of it… but, I digress). And no, your mama might take it and smack you with it if she saw it, unless she’s super cool. But, you’ll be able to lose yourself in it turning pages and laughing for an hour or two.
The drawings here are of the variety that you’ll say, “I could have drawn that!” It’s true, you probably could have – but you didn’t. Aaron did. While the art isn’t “high brow”, the humor is quite good. There’s a very clever sense of humor and irony on display in this book from a pretty smart artist.
A bit about Aaron Palmiter from his blog (http://aaronpalmiter.wordpress.com):
Aaron Palmiter lives in upstate New York in the beautiful Hudson Valley where he works a 9-5 job in the insurance industry. Being creatively starved in his day to day job he started writing comics one day while in his office using a highlighter. This led to other office comics and from there he branched out to other sarcastic spoofs on day to day life.
Aaron spends his time with his family, friends, two dogs and one white and brown bunny named Excalibur. Majoring in English from Siena College with a minor in Creative Arts and a second minor in Broadcasting has given him the tools to put his creativity on paper and appeal to a broad audience. Along with Poetry he is a self proclaimed artist. He draws humorous comics, sketches with charcoal, creates graphic art and is an avid photographer. As a child his family would hear him tell people, “I was born with crayons in my hand.” The advent of his comic book is his dream come true – sharing his “skedginess” with the world! Enjoy and take no offense!
If you could really use a laugh, get this book. You’re sure to find one here!
