Here we go again! Here’s another work of seemingly innocent fiction that turns into an all out work of mystery and suspense. I just love it when that happens! This time the book is the long awaited second self published novel of author Rob Kaufman, One Last Lie. Rob’s first book, published in 2005, is the still popular In the Shadow of Stone
.
In One Last Lie we get the story of Philip & Jonathan, a long term committed gay couple whose lives are complete…almost. At a turning point, and after a visit from an old friend of Phillip’s, Angela, who seemingly has turned her life around since they last saw each other, the couple decides having a child “with” a surrogate would complete their lives. She – the surrogate – would have custody, but they could be doting daddies. You can probably guess that things don’t work out as planned… In fact, things go horribly wrong. You can only begin to imagine.
I’m sorry that I can’t tell you more about the plot of One Last Lie. Anything else I might say will give away too much of the story.
Rob Kaufman has talent, there’s no question. His 2nd effort is a winner. Frankly though, I do have one small bone to pick that deals with time and weight and a combination of the two. In places in the story line, we’re told our leads were constantly being called upon for assistance and then, a few pages later after such a lament we read that they had not seen their tormentor in a couple of months. On a different topic, we’re told about a very large weight gain that took place over too short of a period of time, even for a pregnant woman. Now, these are small things really that don’t detract from the book.
Check out either book by Rob Kaufman. They’re both available in paperback and for the Kindle.
