It’s been a rough week… I seem to be having more than my fair share of those lately! Oh well, as my mom loves to say, “This too shall pass”. Still, I’m in the mood for flat out mindless comedy this weekend (somewhere between the bouts of Olympics watching that we all know I’ll be doing, sports nut that I am).
A movie that I love for a guaranteed laugh out loud good time is the 2005 release (2006 to DVD) Adam & Steve starring Craig Chester (who is also the writer and director), Malcolm Gets, Parker Posey, and Chris Kattan. It’s also one I love for the quality everyone needs in a movie once in a while; it doesn’t make my think too much!
This is a romantic comedy and farce all rolled into one. Craig Chester plays Adam and Malcolm Gets plays Steve, our star crossed couple. In an earlier “life” they met and and went on a single date that was a disaster. Think about the “gross” things that could happen and you’ll see it coming but don’t let that keep you from watching this film. All the gross stuff is at the beginning. Anyway, years later (17 years) the two men meet again under entirely different circumstances. They’ve moved on and changed significantly in many aspects and, as a result, they don’t recognize each other at all. They begin dating. This, of course, comes with issues and perils. The movie is still a comedy, after all!
Parker Posey and Chris Kattan star as the best friends of Adam and Steve respectively. They, of course, try to help and complicate things even more and, in the end they find some common ground themselves. Family issues are prevalent here as well. You just get a little bit of everything! The “little bit of everything” is why I think I like this movie so much…that and the critics pretty much hated it. “They don’t know from comedy!”
