You might be familiar with the name Dan Bucatinsky…or maybe you just like to say it! It does have a pleasant sound! Anyway, if the name seems familiar it’s because he’s an actor and producer (in partnership with Lisa Kudrow). Dan wrote the script for the gay “breakup” movie All Over the Guy and starred in it. It was roundly panned by critics but audiences loved it. With Kudrow he produced and he starred in the HBO comedy “The Comeback” and the pair are now producing a docu-drama series for NBC titled “Who Do You Think You Are”. All of that and he has still found time to star in the internet/web TV series “Web Therapy”.
So, here’s a gay man with a pretty decent Hollywood resume who decides he would like to be a dad. His partner/husband of 20 years agrees and they move fast to become dads because they certainly aren’t getting any younger. They adopt a daughter at birth in 2005 and a son, from the same former teen mother, in 2007. Craziness, of course, ensues.
Dan Bucatinsky is very funny. His book about his adventures as a new – and very gay – dad, Does This Baby Make Me Look Straight?: Confessions of a Gay Dad, is sidesplitting. I laughed so hard in places, I was crying. His perspective on fatherhood is very different and I mean that in a good way. Every gay man contemplating starting a family should read this. Dan has been there and done that and, so far, he’s lived to tell about it!
Now, the book is not all sweetness and light. Almost, but not all. Dan lost his own dad before his son was born. Part of this is about what it was like for him, being his father’s son. Most of it is about becoming a dad.
