If you’ve been hanging around a while, you know I like to read biographies and memoirs. I really like the memoirs and I especially like them when they come from “average” LGBT people and not celebrities. The celebrities usually hold back for career reasons or privacy reasons but average Joe’s usually tell all and let it all hang out.
That’s why it was with great interest that I picked up the late 2011 book, Your Boyfriend and Other Guys I’ve Kissed: The Tails of Totally Tyler by, of course, Totally Tyler. Not being a gay man, I wasn’t totally hip to the whole craze that is Tyler and, more specifically, his blog and, now, this book.
Tyler writes famously about his love life and also a bit about his family but mostly about being a fashionable, gay New Yorker (by way of Indiana and Atlanta) trying to find a boyfriend that’s a keeper. Maybe it sounds dull to you if you’re not familiar with Tyler, but trust me, it’s not!
Anyone who’s ever dated more than one person before finding “the one” will be able to relate to Tyler’s tales…er, tails. You don’t have to be gay to get this. His story is just about everyone’s story – he just blogged it and then he decided to put it all down on paper. And no, the book is not a rehash of his blog. There’s great stuff here.
I alternated between feeling his pain with him and finding the situations he found himself in to be laugh out loud funny. You’ll laugh too and you’ll certainly identify with his stories, even if just a little bit!
