This is primarily a book review blog that covers LGBT related works of both fiction and non-fiction. I love books, most certainly but I do also enjoy watching movies. October is upon us now. We’re coming into prime movie watching season, both at home and in theaters to see new releases. Bearing that in mind, I’ve found what I feel to be the definitive guide to movies for “us”, the GLBTQ as the authors call us.
This 2010, 400 page publication (or more, depending on softcover or hardcover – same content) by Blood Moon Productions, written by Darwin Porter and Danforth Prince is titled: Fifty Years of Queer Cinema: 500 of the Best GLBTQ Films Ever Made. You read that right, 500! That ought to keep us all watching for awhile.
Author Darwin Porter may be known to the movie buffs among you. He certainly will be if your a biography book reader. Mr. Porter has done a considerable amount of tracks containing commentary on DVD releases of old movies. He gets those gigs because of his long history as a “sensationalist” Hollywood biographer. Danforth Prince is the director of Blood Moon productions where Porter has a long term publishing relationship.
This isn’t just a list of gay and lesbian themed movies. Porter reviews each of these and provides that review in essay style narrative. His reviews aren’t a dry reciting of the advertising blurb from the production company either. You get a lively review of each film from a man who’s obviously quite a movie buff. There are lots of special features in the book too. If you’re a movie hound, you’ll be very pleased.
This will be a reference on your coffee table – or right next to the computer you sit at to add things to your Netflix que – for years…or until the updated and revised edition comes out!
