Time for round two of my Angelina Jolie movie review tribute.
Last Friday, I think I pretty firmly established that I find Angelina to be a very good actress and, also, totally hot. Please click here to read my review of her movie Gia if you care and you missed it. There was a time though, a role, early in her career where she wasn’t so much “hot” as she was intense. Interestingly it was a role where she played a sociopath (with some controlling lesbian leaning tendencies). Even more interesting, she wasn’t the lead in the movie, Winona Ryder was, but Jolie stole the show and won the Oscar, the Golden Globe and the Screen Actor’s Guild awards for Best Supporting Actress for her performance.
I’m speaking, of course, about the movie Girl, Interrupted which is “loosely” based on the memoir of Susanna Kaysen titled, you guessed it, Girl, Interrupted
. The 1999 film has often been referred to as a female version of the 1975 movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
starring Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd and Michael Berryman.
Winona portrays Susanna, a woman diagnosed with “borderline personality disorder”. She’s committed to a mental institution to heal. The story line revolves around her and the people she comes into contact with during her stay at the mental hospital. The most enigmatic is Jolie in the role of Lisa. Jolie’s character is the “bad girl” of the bunch. She’d been committed because of her anti-social personality but she’s a rabble rouser that interacts with everyone. She takes special interest in the new to “the system” Susanna and cajoles her into doing things like not taking medications and escaping. She plays the protagonist role to a tee.
Rated against “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by old movie buffs, Girl, Interrupted doesn’t fare as well. If you look at it by itself, for the story that it is, and if you consider that in this case, it’s based on a true story, you’ll find a lot to like in this movie. Based on story and the quality of acting, it’s one of my favorite movies, period.
