I’ve set a theme over the last couple of weeks focusing several days on books for LGBT teenagers. I noticed, when reviewing my traffic stats, that I had searches coming to the site looking for books about teens, especially non-fiction reference type works. I didn’t really have a lot of teen material here since I’m several years removed from that age myself…ahem!
In my effort to make more information available for that under served audience, I chose some fiction and non-fiction books to highlight. Without realizing it, I still left a hole to fill in my recommendations. I hadn’t suggested any books that would be of interest to a transgender teenager or to those who love and support one. I aim to rectify that right now.
Quite frankly, there have not been many transgender references published that are focused on people under age 20. The best one I found, was just published this year. The book is, as my title today says: Helping Your Transgender Teen: A Guide for Parents which was written by Irwin Krieger.
This is Krieger’s first book but don’t let that color your opinion. He’s a licensed, board certified clinical social worker who has focused for well over 20 years on the LGBT community as a whole and since 2003 extensively on the specialized needs of the transgender population. He knows what he’s talking about!
His own words describe his book the best:
“Today’s teens have access to a wealth of information on the internet. Teenagers who are wondering about gender identity soon find out what it means to be transgender or transsexual. Parents, on the other hand, know little about this topic. When a teenager declares he or she is transgender, parents fear that their child is confused and is choosing a life fraught with danger. I wrote this book to help parents of transgender teens gain an understanding of this complex subject.”
And, finally, the product review of this subject tells you exactly what you’re getting…I saw no sense in me rewriting it to say the same thing. I just want those of you who need this type of resource to have all of the pertinent information.
Amazon.com Product Review:
“Helping Your Transgender Teen” begins with the basic information you and your family need. The central chapters of the book address the fears and concerns most parents of transgender teens share. The final chapters guide you through the steps you can take to discover what is best for your child. Although written for parents, this book is also useful for pediatricians, therapists, educators and others who work with teenagers and young adults. “Helping Your Transgender Teen” provides answers to many of your questions about adolescent gender identity.
