Do you have questions? Are you having trouble finding answers? If so, this book, Is It a Choice? Answers to the Most Frequently Asked Questions About Gay & Lesbian People, Third Edition has answers – 300 of them. It answers questions like:
How do you know if you’re gay or lesbian?
What should you do if your child is gay or lesbian?
Do gay parents raise gay children?
If you think a friend is gay or lesbian, what should you say?
Why do gay men and women want to get married?
What does the Bible say about homosexuality?
And many, many more.
The author, Eric Marcus, best known for his biography of gay Olympic and world diving champion Greg Louganis (Breaking the Surface
), “provides insightful, no-nonsense answers to hundreds of the most commonly asked questions about homosexuality. Offering frank insight on everything you’ve always wanted-and needed-to know about same-gender relationships, coming out, family roles, politics”, gays in the workplace, LGBTs in the military and much more.
There’s no preaching here. There is no judgement. This is a “just the facts” question and answer style of book written in language that’s not too simple for adults but that’s also easy for teenagers who might be questioning their sexual orientation or thinking that a friend might be queer and wondering how to approach them about it.
If you’re gay, this book is great for all of those nagging how to come out, when and to who questions once you’ve figured out that you are gay and admitted it to yourself. It’s not a reference for those that are deeply in turmoil or who are severely closeted in need of good advice. To his credit, Marcus does provide quite an extensive listing of LGBT related organizations that can provide assistance and guidance in the back of the book. Though this – the 3rd Edition – was published in 2005, most of these organizations are still fully functional. Of course, many more have sprung up in the past six years! Please, if you need help, you can also see the resources tab above for a starting point.
If you’re straight and the family member, friend, co-worker, employer, teacher or minister to a gay or lesbian person (or people) this book will answer most of your questions.
