As a book geek, I admit that you can often find me doing things like reading through indexes and bibliographies and such. Yes, I read bibliographies. I enjoy reading books about other books as much as anything. Given that information, it should come as no surprise that I really enjoyed a work of fiction where a book is the main character speaking in the first person.
When we were children, we heard and read stories about objects that came to life and had grand adventures. Author David Pratt has taken that concept two steps further. He brought a book to life in his 1st fiction novel, Bob the Book and he also made “Bob” gay. This is by far, the most creative, original spin on a work of fiction that I’ve had the pleasure to read.
“Bob” is a book about gay male pornography from the pre-Stonewall days through 1979. He lives in a West Village (NYC) bookstore where he sits and anxiously awaits the perfect buyer; a buyer that will meet his exacting standards. As he waits, he falls in love with Moishe, a book about Orthodox Jews who are gay. Moishe and Bob are sold and go to different buyers. The story continues with their lives with their new owners and other books Bob meets along the way and the stories they have to tell.
Be prepared to laugh with this book. Understand that you probably won’t want to put it down until you finish it. Know that you’ll probably never look at your own books quite the same way again!
