Written by The Gay & Lesbian Review Worldwide is a “bimonthly journal of history, culture and politics” focused on the LGBT community. It’s billed as “a journal for thinking lesbians and gay men” and it is just that. This magazine focuses on in depth analysis of how we got where we are (history), who we are (culture), and politics (how we get where we want to go).
You won’t find page after page of fashion ads in the Gay & Lesbian Review Worldwide. There are no fluff travel pieces either. If you read my The Advocate/Out magazine rant then you know how I feel about the fluff that magazines like “Out” represent. Out focuses almost entirely on an upscale gay male party culture. The Advocate, while still relevant to all of the LGBT community to some degree, at varying times, is not what it once was. I digress…
Yes, this magazine reviews books. Yes, it sometimes touches on movies and plays. Yes it sometimes addresses current pop culture icons and also the biggest stars of stage and screen. It goes about it a bit differently though in a thoughtful, well researched and well reasoned manner. This magazine is more about our lives and our experiences and how these things affect them than it is about pushing the next big thing upon us.
I enjoy reading this every other month and, as a lover of books, I believe you will too.
