In my ongoing quest to become more knowledgeable about the “T” portion of LGBT, I’ve continued to seek out and read books on the transgendered and those that are transitioning or considering doing so. Before now, I’d read some biographies and one book on gender in general. I got a bit of transgender history from other readings about Stonewall but I had no real feel for the whole of it.
I began to search for a book that was not either an autobiographical sketch of the transitioning process (like the book written by Chaz Bono, Transition: The Story of How I Became a Man) nor a study on gender but was, rather, a historical overview. I found what I was looking for with the Susan Stryker authored book aptly titled Transgender History
, published by Seal Press (Seal Studies). With her book, you start off with a great glossary that defines all of the relevant terms in the transgender lexicon in a very detailed but not overly academic manner. From there, you continue into transgender history from the early days up through 2008.
This is an easy, yet enlightening read that gives you the facts without all of the gender debate and all of the politics. The book is fully indexed. Also included is an extremely extensive list of further reading and other information resources.
