I know, I know; this is supposed to be a book blog! You’re thinking you’ve seen movies listed here and now I’m blogging about music. What’s next? You’re not a one dimensional person and neither am I. Sure, I love books. I live for a good page turner. Life is infinitely better though, when we allow ourselves the occasional pleasures of visual and aural media, don’t you agree?
In 2008, out lesbian recording artist k.d. lang (she doesn’t use capitals), released her album Watershed after 4 years between recordings. She went quiet again sometime in 2009. As an Olympics junkie, I noted her presence in at the 2010 opening ceremonies in Vancouver and got to wondering where she’d been lately. Then, in April of this year, she released the album k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang (her own band for a change) Sing It Loud
. It’s climbing the pop and adult contemporary charts quite rapidly.
Much of this album is recorded live in a studio setting. There are 10 songs, all with a romantic ballad kind of feel, sung in her unique voice. Where once her sound was described as a cross between pop and country, this album shows off a style that seems to be a favorable mix of a 1950s sound (?) and a light rockabilly sort of country/rock vibe. It’s very hard to describe but oh so pleasing to the ear! lang claims to have written the album specifically for the Canadian folk festivals she still loves to perform at, so there you go.
